Women In Medtech: Beatrice Ferrante

Careers for the head and heart

Meet women who are changing lives at LivaNova

Beatrice Ferrante

Beatrice Ferrante is an Industrial Engineer in Cardiopulmonary at LivaNova in Munich, Germany. She is working on the industrialization of new devices, design improvements, and new spare parts for the heart-lung machine, from process definition, through validation, to ramp-up. She has been with the company since January 2024.

Q: What led you to pursue a career in medtech?

A: I've always known that I wanted to work in the medtech field because of my passion for math and physics, as well as my interest in the medical world. I started by studying biomedical engineering, and from the moment I stepped into the classroom, I was sure that I wanted to stay in this field. But knowing the importance of the final product is what really motivates me. I previously worked at a pharma company, and now being at LivaNova is a good combination of challenging topics that I think would interest any engineer. It gives me a sense of purpose.

Q: Who is a woman who has mentored or inspired you throughout your career?

A: I've had many inspirational women in my life who were strong and career-oriented, from professors to former managers. However, I have to get a bit sentimental here and say that my mom is my biggest inspiration. She has been working at the same company for more than 35 years in the HR department. She always found the perfect balance between family and pursuing her career goals. My mom is who I try to model to find work-life balance.

Q: What keeps you engaged in your work?

A: I appreciate when tasks are challenging. When you need to put your head into the game, there are different options and things to analyze. Problem solving is what keeps me engaged. However, a healthy and collaborative working environment is surely as important. I love knowing that, at the end of my day, if I have a path forward that I want to take, there is always somebody who listens to me. I can talk to my manager and colleagues, share my ideas, or ask for feedback.

Q: Why would you encourage other women in medtech to work at LivaNova?

A: While I haven't been here long, I feel like it's a very good working environment; not just for me, but for women in general. Your opinion matters. From my perspective, LivaNova is the perfect-sized company because it's big enough so that processes are well defined and precise, but also small enough so you get the chance to meet people, talk to them, and create personal connections. You can learn more about their jobs, their departments, and what they do, and you gain more knowledge from the conversation. As a young engineer, I value this a lot.

Q: Can you share with us a little-known fact about yourself?

A: In the last four years since graduation, I’ve moved around a lot, living in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. During these stays, I’ve fallen in love with mountains. And now, I don’t think I could live without them. Every weekend, I’m either skiing in the mountains or hiking. It has become my passion. Now I know, wherever I go in the future, I will always be close to the mountains.
